The Château de L´OiselinièreOur Wines AccommodationNews

The castle is a villa built in Italian style between 1822 and 1835 to enclose a square courtyard dated from the 17th century. The villa, the outbuildings, the orangery and the gallery of “Les Illustres” are included in the inventory of historical monuments since 1997 and are cited as reference in the inventory "Clisson or return to Italy."

To the west of the villa, near the orangery stands a set of architectural interest with six niches on its main facade which are made of circular brick and adorned with busts of famous men. From left to right, we can recognize Olivier de Clisson, Conde, Duquesne, Jean Bart, and Bayard Duguesclin.

History : The Oiselinière estate was, before the French Revolution a “Seigniory”. It is mentioned as early as 1335 in the charter ”Les Actes”.
It spreads over the districts of Gorges and Clisson, and under the feudal system depended on the Seigneurs of Clisson and Pallet. For 643 years, this Seigniory only changed families four times: Maurice le Meigen was the owner, then in 1460 one of this descendants through allegiance, Claude Grézeau took over. His family sold the seigniory of the Oiselinière to Jean Goulet de la Fosse de Nantes in 1613. Louis de la Bourdonnaye acquired the property in 1658. Then in 1767, the seigniory was sold to the ancestors of the Aulanier family (This family made a great contribution in the Second World War, Oselinière being a hotbed of resistance).

At Oiselinière vines have been grown for centuries--in fact leases written on parchment dated 1337, 1471,1505, 1546 have been preserved. On the parchment dated from 1635 in particular, there is the first mention of Muscadet. It is the first known lease today and is written as follows:
“Jean de Goulet de la Fosse de Nantes leases to several private individuals from the Parish of Gorges, a piece of land consisting of 78 plots, known as “Les Grands Gâts” dependent on the land of the Oiselinière in order to plant white Muscadet vines.”

1The vineyards

The vineyards of Château de l’Oiselinière are grown on the ridges and the plateau which look over the right bank of the Sèvre, facing south-westwards. The property has a total surface of 43 hectares planted with Muscadet vine-plants(still termed Melon de Bourgogne).
The average age of the vines is 40 years, with certain plots more than 70 years.
These vines yields very mature, concentrated grapes from which are derived the distinctive qualities of the Oiselinière wines.

2The soil

The vines of Oiselinière grow on a base formed from a rock known as "Gabbro”. It is a volcanic silica-clay rock, which decomposes on the surface to clay and small ochre or red colored gravel. This zone of gabbro is limited and runs from Pallet to the edge of Clisson.
This soil allows the production of particularly aromatic wines, very rich and with a long lasting after-taste, and the possibility of maturing over several years. The south-western exposure of the majority of the vines allows the grapes to mature fully which is essential for the capture of the aromas.
